as
part of jim colquhoun's gangrel
bodies exhibition (15 to 24, june 2005) i contributed
two works. the first, of aberdeen, was an 8
hour continuous soundwalk exploring aberdeen, recorded
onto six 80 minute minidiscs with binaural microphones.
this was then transferred to an mp3 disc and installed
as a headphone installation at mckay's on queen street
in aberdeen. (29-31 queen street, t: 01224 643136)
the
second work, from
aberdeen, is a solo performance for prepared
guitar using objects found during the walk, june 24th
in the peacocks visual art's printshop at 6:30.

‘of
aberdeen’, audio installation, 8 hours
this
piece is an 8 hour soundwalk recorded binaurally
during one long continuous exploration of aberdeen.
it is converted into an mp3 file and loops continuously.
the idea for the work is very simple: throughout
our day we filter out the sounds around us in
order to focus on going where we're going, doing
what we need to do etc. as a result, we miss
the beauty of our ambient surroundings. i wanted
to create a work that would explore these surroundings
but also encourage listeners to hear these sounds
aesthetically as well. due to the sheer length
of the piece, it is hoped that listeners will
get lost within the work and not be able to
predict when or where they are within the soundwalk.
in hearing these sounds out of context, listeners
are encouraged to listen (and thus 'hear' them)
as though for the first time. this soundwalk
also traces my own exploration as i wander around
the city, led only by sounds that interest me,
documented only by sounds i hear.
each
page only roughly corresponds to each of the 80 minute
minidiscs of the walk. |
