GAVAA Project: The Brakanator

In 2007 I was awarded the Gray’s Aberdeen Visual Artists Award Scheme (GAVAA), to create a video program for use in my performances and installations. Specifically I wanted to create a program that would allow me to focus three cameras on myself or another performer to be manipulated and projected during performances. It was also intended that it could be automated for use in installations and for other purely visual works as well.

The software environment used to develop the program was max/MSP and Jitter from Cycling74. Not being a programmer myself, I learned to use max/MSP/Jitter by studying with max/Msp guru Sebastian Lexar in London over the course of several months in 2007. I also received many useful suggestions from friends and colleagues, in particular Jack Keenan who was especially generous with his time and help.

In addition to incorporating many of the examples and help files provided within the max/MSP/Jitter package, numerous shaders by programmer and artist Vade (who's great, check him out!) were also incorporated into the program.

The program was named after Stan Brakhage, who's always been a sort of hero of mine, not only in his visual work, but in terms of his innovative and creative approach to art and technology in general.

Here are a few more screen shots while using the Brakanator:
